Taking Trees Down on Tight City Lots
Tree removal on a typical South Bend lot rarely means one cut at the base. Houses in the older neighborhoods sit close together, garages back onto alleys, and service wires cross the yard, so most trees have to come down piece by piece. A climber or a lift takes off the limbs first, then the trunk in sections, and anything too heavy to drop is lowered on a rope. How a tree comes down depends less on its height than on what's underneath it.
Signs a tree should come out
Some cases are clear: a tree that leafed out only on one side this spring, a trunk with a long open crack, mushrooms or soft wood at the base, or a fresh lean with the soil heaved up on the opposite side. After the March 2025 windstorm, which brought trees down across St. Joseph County, a lot of homeowners found out their trees had been hollow for years. Other cases are judgment calls: a healthy silver maple that has simply outgrown a small yard, roots heaving a driveway, or a tree that drops a big limb every winter. We tell you what we see and whether trimming could fix it instead.
Ash, oak and the trees that fail
Ash is the most common removal we see. South Bend's forestry staff estimated that all of the city's ash trees had been hit by emerald ash borer, and dead ash turns brittle within a few years. Oaks are different: a red oak killed by oak wilt should be removed carefully, and Purdue notes that the disease can also move between nearby oaks through grafted roots, so the timing and handling of oak removals matter. Silver maple, boxelder and old Siberian elm are the other trees that tend to shed big limbs in our storms.
Near the house, the wires and the street
Over roofs and garages, limbs are rigged so they swing away from the building and are lowered instead of dropped. We don't cut near energized utility lines; if a tree is in I&M's lines, the utility clears it first. If the tree stands in the tree lawn between the sidewalk and the curb, South Bend requires a permit before it's removed. The permit is free, and we flag it at the estimate so it's approved before work day.
Wood, brush and stump
You choose what happens to everything that comes down. Logs can be left in rounds for firewood, cut to length or hauled off. Brush is chipped, and the chips can stay for mulch or go with us. The stump is a separate line on the quote, so you can grind it the same day or leave it.
Winter removals
Frozen ground carries equipment across a lawn with less rutting, and bare branches make a tree easier to read and rig. Deep lake-effect snow and ice can also slow a job or make climbing unsafe. We schedule around the weather and tell you if a few weeks' wait would be easier on your yard.
What We Handle
Removal includes taking the tree down and dealing with everything that comes off it.
Sectional dismantling
Limbs and trunk sections taken off from the top and lowered on ropes where the drop zone is crowded.
Hazard and dead tree removal
Trees with decay, cracks or dead crowns taken down before wind or snow load does it for you.
Brush chipping
Branches fed through a chipper on site, with chips left for your beds or hauled away.
Log handling
Trunk wood left in rounds, cut to firewood length or removed from the property.
Tree lawn removals
Trees between the sidewalk and curb removed once South Bend's free tree lawn permit is approved.

Tree Removal Questions
How much does tree removal cost in South Bend?
Homeyou's 2026 figures for South Bend put a medium tree at about $606 to $821, with trees over 60 feet around $1,000 and hard-to-reach trees up to about $1,200. National guides run from about $150 for a small tree to $2,000 or more for a large one. Access and what's under the tree move the price the most.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in my yard?
The South Bend permit program covers tree lawn trees, the ones between the sidewalk and curb, and those need a free permit from Forestry at 574-299-4766 before removal. The city's permit page doesn't extend that to back yard trees. Subdivision covenants in some neighborhoods outside the city may have their own rules, so check yours.
Is a dead tree harder to remove?
Usually. Dead wood breaks unpredictably, so rigging takes longer and sometimes a lift is safer than climbing. Angi notes poor tree health can add up to about 15% to the cost. Taking a declining tree down before it's fully dead is often simpler.
Can you take down a tree that leans over my neighbor's yard?
Yes. Limbs over the neighbor's side are cut and lowered on ropes so nothing lands where it shouldn't. We may need to stand on their side of the fence, so a heads-up to them helps. Make sure the tree is actually on your side of the line before it comes down.
Is stump grinding included?
Only if you want it. The stump is listed separately on the quote. Many people grind it the same day; others leave it or grind later.
