Nappanee Trees and the City's Brush Limits

Tree Service in Nappanee often starts with a question about the curb. The city's street department collects brush on Mondays from spring through September 28, weather permitting, but only branches up to four feet long and three inches thick. Whole trees, stumps and limbs that you cut yourself or paid someone to cut are not collected; bigger limbs are taken only if they came down in a storm. Anything beyond small trimmings has to be disposed of privately, which is why our Nappanee estimates always include the cleanup.

From swamp and woods to RV town

Before settlement, the Nappanee area was dense woods with widespread swamps, many of them tamarack marshes. Early industries included a sawmill, box making, charcoal and furniture; the B&O Railroad arrived in 1874 and the town was platted that year. Today the city of about 6,900 people sits in both Elkhart and Kosciusko counties and is a regional center for RV manufacturing and Amish crafts. The Borkholder Nature Center & Wetlands, one of the city's nine parks, keeps a bit of that wet landscape.

Low, wet ground affects trees in two ways. Roots stay shallow where the water table is high, which makes trees easier to tip in wind. And trees that grew up in saturated soil can decline when drainage changes after construction. If your lot used to be wetter or has been regraded, keep an eye on the big trees.

Storm reports in and around Nappanee

  • July 23, 2022: the National Weather Service listed widespread wind damage one mile west-southwest of Nappanee.
  • July 16, 2024: a large tree came down onto a home in Nappanee during the same overnight storms that produced the Elkhart tornado.

Neither event was exotic. Both were ordinary summer storms, which is the point: it doesn't take a tornado to put a weak tree on a roof.

Jobs we see most

  • Removing dead ash and other declining shade trees
  • Sectional removal of trees close to houses, garages and shops
  • Pruning deadwood and weight off limbs over roofs
  • Stump grinding after removals
  • Storm cleanup, including large limbs the city won't take

Neighborhoods

The Downtown Nappanee Historic District and the Nappanee Eastside Historic District are both on the National Register, and the older streets around them have the biggest trees in town. The homes on the city's edges and the farms around it have their own needs: windbreaks, fencerows and trees near outbuildings.

What to send us

A photo of the whole tree, one of the base, and a note on what's nearby (house, wires, fence, driveway) gives us enough to plan the visit. We then come out and put the estimate in writing.

Firewood, mulch or neither

Many Nappanee-area owners heat with wood or know someone who does. If you want the trunk wood, we cut it to stove length or into rounds and leave it where you choose; brush can be chipped into mulch and left in a pile, or everything can be hauled. Each option is priced separately, so you only pay for the cleanup you want.

Nappanee Questions

Will Nappanee pick up the limbs from my tree removal?

No. The city takes small branches up to 4 feet long and 3 inches thick, and larger limbs only when they fell in a storm. Removal wood is handled as part of our job.

Are trees on wet ground more likely to blow over?

Often, yes. A high water table keeps roots shallow, so the root plate is smaller. That's worth considering for big trees near the house.

Do you work on farm properties outside the city?

Yes. We handle windbreaks, fencerows and trees near barns and shops in the countryside around Nappanee.

Can you leave wood chips for my garden beds?

Yes. Fresh chips from a removal make a good path or bed mulch once they have weathered a bit. Tell us where you want the pile so the truck can reach it.
