Edwardsburg Sits on Michigan Rules and Michigan Oaks

Tree Service in Edwardsburg looks a lot like tree work in Granger, a few miles south, until the subject turns to oaks. The village is in Cass County, Michigan, at the crossroads of M-62 and US 12, and it follows Michigan's approach to oak wilt. Many lots here, in the village and around Ontwa Township, have oaks big enough that a badly timed pruning cut could cost the tree.

Oak wilt, briefly

Oak wilt is a fungal disease. Sap-feeding beetles carry it from infected trees to fresh wounds, and it also moves underground through grafted roots between neighboring oaks. Trees in the red oak group, including northern red, black and pin oak, are most vulnerable and can die within weeks; white, swamp white and bur oaks resist it better. Michigan's DNR says there's no cure, so the advice is prevention: do not prune or wound oaks between April 15 and July 15, and if a storm damages one during that window, paint the wound right away.

What that means for an Edwardsburg job:

  • Routine oak pruning is booked for late fall and winter.
  • If construction, a driveway project or a storm wounds an oak in spring, call quickly so the wound can be sealed.
  • If an oak drops its leaves suddenly in summer, have it checked; Michigan asks that suspected cases be reported through its Oak Wilt Mapper or to the DNR forest health team.
  • Don't move firewood from a tree suspected of oak wilt. The DNR says to burn it on site, chip it or debark it before April 15.

The village and its surroundings

Edwardsburg was settled in 1828 on what was called Beardsley's Prairie and is named for early settler and politician Abraham Edwards. It was incorporated as a village in 1911 and had 1,304 residents in 2020, on just over a square mile. The village itself is small, and we work on properties across the surrounding Ontwa Township as well. Larger township parcels often mix yard trees with wooded edges, where trees grown in competition carry heavy limbs on one side and lean toward open ground. Those are worth a look before storm season.

What we do here most

1. Pruning and deadwood removal on mature oaks, timed for the dormant season 2. Removing dead or dying trees, including ash 3. Sectional removal near homes, garages and outbuildings 4. Stump grinding 5. Storm cleanup after summer wind events

Not just oaks

Maples, pines, spruce and ash fill out the rest of the canopy. Those species don't carry the same April-to-July restriction, so a mixed job can be split: non-oak work in spring or summer, oak work in the dormant season.

Before you call

Tell us whether the tree is an oak if you know, whether it's near the house or a line, and how a truck can reach it. A photo of the leaves helps identify the species. If you are not sure what the tree is, that is fine; we identify it on site.

  • Michigan oak wilt window. The Michigan DNR advises no oak pruning from April 15 to July 15; red-group oaks can die within weeks of infection and there is no cure.
  • Firewood from oak wilt trees. The DNR advises burning on site, chipping or debarking wood from a suspected oak wilt tree before April 15; wood dried over a year no longer spreads it.

  • Small village footprint. The 2020 census counted 1,304 residents on about 1.02 square miles, including 0.10 square miles of water.

Edwardsburg Questions

When can I have my oaks pruned in Edwardsburg?

Late fall and winter are safest. Michigan DNR guidance is to avoid oak pruning from April 15 to July 15, when oak wilt spreads most easily.

My red oak lost its leaves in July. What should I do?

Have it checked soon. Sudden summer leaf drop on a red oak is a classic oak wilt sign, and Michigan asks that suspected cases be reported. Don't move the wood off site.

Do you work outside the village limits?

Yes. We work throughout Ontwa Township and the nearby Indiana side around Granger, so a job near the state line on either side is routine.

Can you tell an oak from a maple in winter?

Yes. Bark, buds and the dried leaves many oaks hold into winter make identification straightforward, which matters for scheduling oak work in the dormant season.
