Tree Service in Niles, MI

Crossing the Line Into Michigan Tree Rules

Tree Service in Niles works a little differently than it does a few miles south in Indiana. Niles sits on the St. Joseph River in Berrien and Cass counties, with rolling hills and steep river banks, and it brings two local factors with it: Michigan's guidance on oak pruning, and a city utility department that handles trees around its own electric lines.

Oaks: mind the calendar

The Michigan DNR asks owners not to prune oaks between April 15 and July 15. During that window, sap beetles can carry oak wilt spores to fresh wounds, and red-group oaks such as northern red, black and pin oak can die within weeks of infection. There's no cure once a tree is infected. If an oak is wounded during that period, the DNR advises covering the wound right away with tree-wound or latex paint; other species shouldn't be painted. We schedule non-urgent oak pruning in Niles for fall and winter.

Who trims near the power lines

The city's FAQ says the Niles Utilities Department trims trees around electrical lines and may remove trees when needed, usually with a door hanger and a call or visit first. On private property, trimming is discussed with the owner and wood stays on site; in the boulevard, wood is hauled and stumps ground later in fall or early winter. Utility tree questions go to 269-683-4700 ext. 1321. Anything outside the line-clearance zone is the owner's to manage, and that's where we come in.

Brush chipping, and what it doesn't cover

Niles runs a free brush chipping program on the second and fourth Tuesdays from late April to mid-October. Call Public Works at 683-4700 ext. 3062 by noon the Friday before, and have material at the curb by 7 a.m. Each piece has to be light enough for one person to handle, and vines, leaves, thorny bushes, brush with dirt and limbs with nails or wire are left behind. The program does not cover tree topping or removals that a contractor would normally do, so wood from our jobs is chipped and hauled by us. The city extended pickup after the October 11, 2021 windstorm, so storm years can change the schedule.

Older city, older trees

Niles traces its story to Fort St. Joseph, built in 1697, and the four nations whose flags flew over it. Incorporated as a city in 1859, it has neighborhoods of older homes with mature shade trees close to houses and sidewalks. Census QuickFacts shows about 63.2% of homes are owner-occupied, and about 20.6% of residents are 65 or older, so many calls come from long-time owners who no longer want to climb ladders or haul brush.

River flooding

Island Park, on an island in the St. Joseph River, can be fully submerged in high floods, and during the August 11, 2026 storms the NWS logged river and creek overflow with yard and basement flooding in Niles. Riverbank trees and those on low ground can lose anchorage when soil stays saturated, so a new lean after high water is worth a check.

Niles Questions

Can I have my oak trimmed in June?

It's best not to. Michigan DNR guidance is to avoid pruning oaks from April 15 to July 15 because of oak wilt. If a storm breaks an oak limb then, the wound should be painted promptly.

Will the city's brush program take wood from my tree removal?

No. Niles' chipping program excludes removals and topping normally done by a tree contractor. Our estimate includes hauling.

The city trimmed my tree for the power line. Can you shape the rest?

Yes, as long as we stay out of the line-clearance zone. We can balance the crown so the tree doesn't grow lopsided after utility trimming.
