Cassopolis: Lake Country Tree Work
Tree Service in Cassopolis is shaped by water. The village, county seat of Cass County since it was platted in 1831, is associated with Diamond Lake, described as the largest lake in southwestern Michigan, and about 0.22 of its 2.24 square miles is water. Shoreline yards, sloped lots and trees leaning toward open water make up a good share of the work here, alongside ordinary village yards with mature shade trees.
Lakeshore trees, different rules of thumb. A tree that grew on a shoreline has wind coming at it across open water, roots in soil that stays damp, and a crown that leans toward the light over the lake. That combination isn't automatically dangerous, but it changes what we look for:
- Erosion undercutting roots along the bank
- A lean that has increased since last year
- Cracked or lifted soil on the landward side
- Heavy limbs extended over docks, boats or a neighbor's roof
Getting the job done on a tight lot. Many lake lots don't let a truck reach the tree. That means climbing, rigging and lowering pieces by rope, then carrying wood out to the street. It takes longer than an open-yard removal, and our written estimate explains why.
Oaks and the Michigan calendar. Cass County oaks fall under Michigan DNR guidance: don't prune oaks between April 15 and July 15. Oak wilt spreads when sap beetles carry spores to fresh cuts, and it also travels root to root between neighboring oaks, which matters in a village where oaks often stand in groups. Red-group oaks can die within weeks, so we save oak pruning for the dormant season and seal any wound that happens in spring.
An old village with old trees. Cassopolis was incorporated in 1863 and was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and its streets carry trees from many decades of planting. The 2020 census counted 1,712 residents. Established neighborhoods have mature shade trees standing close to houses and sidewalks, which means careful sectional work when one has to come down.
What we handle here: 1. Dormant-season oak pruning 2. Lakeshore removals and weight-reduction pruning over water 3. Dead ash removal 4. Storm cleanup of broken limbs and uprooted trees 5. Stump grinding in yards and shoreline lawns 6. Clearing brush and volunteer trees from overgrown lot edges
Firewood caution. If a tree is suspected of having died from oak wilt, Michigan's DNR says to burn the wood on site, chip it or remove the bark before April 15, and not to haul it elsewhere. Wood dried for over a year no longer spreads the disease. We'll ask about symptoms before deciding what happens to the wood.
Before the visit. Photos from the street and from the lake side, plus a note about gates, slopes and seawalls, help us plan.
Seasons on the lake. Late fall and winter often suit shoreline jobs best. Docks and lifts are out of the water, leaves are down so weak forks and dead limbs are easy to see, and oak pruning falls safely outside Michigan's April-to-July caution window. Summer storm damage, of course, gets handled when it happens.

Cassopolis Questions
Can you remove a tree on a lake lot without driving on my lawn?
Often, yes. Shoreline trees are usually climbed and lowered in sections, with wood carried out. We will tell you if any machine access is needed and how we'll protect the lawn.
My neighbor's oak died last summer. Are my oaks at risk?
They could be if the trees are close enough for roots to graft. Have the dead tree checked for oak wilt, and avoid wounding your own oaks between April 15 and July 15.
Do you work outside the village?
Yes, in the townships around Cassopolis as well. Tell us the road and we'll confirm.
When should I schedule pruning for trees over my dock?
Late fall or winter is usually easiest, once the dock and lift are out and leaves are down. If the trees are oaks, that timing also keeps you clear of the April 15 to July 15 oak wilt window.
