A City Named for Its Maples

Tree Service in La Porte deals with some of the oldest planted trees in the region. The city's Maple City nickname goes back to the 1850s, when resident Sebastian Lay planted many maples along Indiana and Michigan avenues; that corridor is now the Indiana and Michigan Avenues Historic District. Old street plantings, lakeside oaks and 170 years of yard trees make La Porte a place where pruning and careful removal matter more than quick cutting.

The August 2026 derecho hit La Porte County hardest

Of all the counties around South Bend, La Porte County took the most tree damage when the derecho crossed on August 11, 2026. The National Weather Service recorded gusts of 58 to 60 mph in La Porte and 74 mph just northwest of Michigan City. Its damage list includes numerous trees down in La Porte, a tree onto a garage in the city, trees and power lines down, trees blocking SR 104 near Fish Lake, and homes struck in Westville. Earlier, on May 23, 2020, law enforcement reported trees down in La Porte, and on July 23, 2022, a branch pierced a minivan windshield in town. Many owners are still dealing with trees that were damaged but not knocked down.

Damaged, not down: what to check

  • Torn branch stubs high in the crown, which invite decay if they are not cut back cleanly
  • Cracked forks in maples, a common weak point in old silver and Norway maples
  • Hangers, broken limbs still caught in the canopy
  • Root lift on lakeside or wet lots, where saturated soil let the tree rock
  • Bark damage where another tree fell against the trunk

Lakes and lot types

La Porte surrounds or borders Clear, Crane, Fish Trap, Horseshoe, Lily, Lower, Orr, Pine and Stone lakes. Lakefront trees often lean toward the water and grow in soil that stays moist, and access for equipment can be tight between houses. Some removals there are done from the water side or entirely by climbing and rigging. In-town lots on the historic avenues have large trees close to houses and sidewalks, with overhead lines along the street.

The city's own woods

La Porte's parks show how big the trees here can get. Soldiers Memorial Park, about 556 acres around Stone Lake, is roughly 85% woodland and water. Original white oaks still stand in Charles W. Lindewald Park on Lower Lake, and early-1900s plantings of oak, hawthorn and wild apple have matured in Fox Memorial Park. Homes bordering those parks see the same species and the same storm exposure.

Housing

Census QuickFacts reports a 60.4% owner-occupied housing rate in La Porte and a median owner-occupied value of $157,500. About 86.7% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier. Long-time owners tend to have trees they have watched grow for decades, and they usually want to keep them if they can be kept safely.

How we approach a La Porte job

We start by deciding whether the tree can stay. For old maples and oaks, a crown cleaning that removes deadwood, hangers and torn stubs often buys many more years. When a tree has to go, we plan the rigging around the house, the street and any lines, and we write down exactly how the wood will be handled.

La Porte Questions

My maple lost limbs in the derecho. Can it be saved?

Often. If the trunk and main forks are sound, cutting torn stubs back cleanly and removing hangers can keep it healthy for years. A crack that runs into the trunk or a main fork usually changes the answer.

Can you remove a tree on a narrow lakefront lot?

Yes. Tight lakefront lots are usually handled by climbing and lowering the tree in sections, sometimes working toward the water. We look at access during the estimate.

Do you work in Michigan City and Westville too?

Our La Porte County work is centered on the city of La Porte. Call and tell us where the tree is, and we will tell you plainly whether it is within our area.
