Bristol's Brush Rules Change Who Hauls the Wood
Tree Service in Bristol has one local rule every homeowner should know before hiring anyone: the town's brush crew will not pick up wood left by a tree trimmer. Bristol's brush guidelines say contractors and workers you hire, including tree trimmers, landscapers and builders, must remove the limbs, trunks and logs they generate, and may not leave them at the curb. So when you compare quotes, check whether hauling is included.
How Bristol's brush pickup works for your own trimming:
- Collection is the third Thursday of each month, April through November.
- Branches must be under 8 feet long and set at the front curb, not in the street, by 7 a.m.
- Keep piles free of trash and leave a gap between separate piles.
- Sticks thinner than a broom handle, twigs and leaves go in bags or carts under the yard waste rules.
- Crews make one pass per collection, so a pile set out late waits a month.
Our estimates in Bristol state the cleanup plainly: chipped and hauled, wood left in rounds, or a mix. If you want to keep firewood, tell us where to stack it.
A small town with old properties. Bristol was platted around 1835 and named after Bristol, England. The Elkhart County Historical Museum occupies the former Bristol-Washington Township School, and the Solomon Fowler Mansion and St. John of the Cross Episcopal Church are on the National Register. The town covers about 4.16 square miles, including 0.14 square miles of water, with about 1,800 residents. Older homes near the center tend to have big trees close to the house; newer lots on the edges have younger trees that benefit from structural pruning while they are still small.
Storm reports nearby. During the August 11, 2026 derecho, the National Weather Service listed a tree down on County Road 17 near Bristol, while the Goshen airport measured a 63 mph gust. On March 8, 2017, the Elkhart airport and nearby stations measured gusts in the 40s and 50s, and a large tree fell onto a car just west-northwest of Elkhart. Bristol's trees take the same weather.
Common jobs in Bristol: 1. Removing dead or declining ash trees 2. Reducing limbs that overhang roofs and garages 3. Clearing trees and brush along property edges and the river side of lots 4. Grinding stumps left by earlier removals 5. Storm cleanup of split trunks and hanging limbs
Why prune young trees. A ten-year-old maple with two competing leaders is easy to correct with a few cuts. Left alone for another twenty years, the same fork becomes a split waiting to happen. Structural pruning on young trees is inexpensive and saves a removal later.
Trees near the river. Bristol includes about 0.14 square miles of water, and lots that slope toward the St. Joseph River often have trees leaning out toward the light over the water. Those trees are rarely urgent, but they can undercut banks when they fall and take soil with them. If a riverside tree has started to tip, or the bank under it is eroding, it is worth having it looked at while there are still choices about how to take it down.

Bristol Questions
Can I put the wood from my tree job out for the town brush crew?
Not if a contractor cut it. Bristol requires hired trimmers to remove what they generate. Branches you trim yourself can go out under the monthly brush pickup rules.
Do you prune small trees, or only big ones?
Both. Pruning a young tree to one strong leader is some of the most useful, and least expensive, tree work there is.
Do you work outside the town limits?
Yes, throughout Washington Township and the surrounding part of Elkhart County.
How far ahead should I book non-urgent tree work in Bristol?
A few weeks is typical for pruning and planned removals, and late fall through winter is often a good time for both. Storm damage is scheduled ahead of planned work.
