Living Next to a State Park's Worth of Trees
Tree Service in North Liberty covers two very different kinds of property: compact lots in a town of about 1,600 people, and wooded or farm parcels out in Liberty Township. Potato Creek State Park, whose nearest town is North Liberty, takes up 3,840 acres of mature woodland, old fields, restored prairie and wetland around 327-acre Worster Lake. Living near that much forest means more big trees close to homes, and more of them reaching the end of their lives at once.
Two storms in three years
North Liberty has been on the National Weather Service's damage lists twice recently:
- July 29, 2023: several trees down, including one at Jefferson Street and IN-4, plus downed power lines.
- August 11, 2026: numerous large trees reported down near North Liberty during the derecho, the same morning two healthy trees were uprooted on SR 104 near Walkerton.
The second report is the one to notice. Healthy trees do fail in wind like that, but trees with decay, root damage or heavy dead limbs fail first and fail more often.
Woodlot trees versus yard trees
A tree that grew up in a woodlot and is now standing alone beside a house behaves differently from one planted in an open yard. Woodlot trees tend to be tall and narrow with small root plates, because their neighbors used to break the wind for them. When a lot is cleared for a house or driveway, the remaining trees suddenly take the full force of storms. If your home was carved out of wooded ground, the edge trees closest to the house deserve a careful look.
What we usually do here
- Removing dead ash, now common in Indiana woodlots since emerald ash borer was confirmed in all 92 counties
- Felling or sectioning large oaks and maples near homes, sheds and driveways
- Clearing storm-downed trees from yards and lanes
- Thinning crowded trees along a property edge so the keepers have room
- Stump grinding where a lawn will go back in
- Pruning limbs back from roofs and outbuildings
Town lots
Inside town, North Liberty has 684 housing units on about a square mile, and the North Liberty Historic District is on the National Register. Older houses in the district often have large trees close to foundations, porches and power drops. Those jobs take rigging and patience more than big machinery.
Wood you may want to keep
Owners on bigger parcels often want to keep the trunk wood for firewood or let it season for a woodstove. We can cut it into rounds and leave it where you want, chip only the brush, or haul everything. That choice changes the price, and the estimate lists it separately. Indiana's DNR still encourages buying firewood locally and burning it completely.
Before you call
If the tree is out on a lane or behind a barn, tell us how a truck reaches it and whether the ground is firm. A pin on a map or a photo from the road saves time.

North Liberty Questions
Can you leave the wood for firewood?
Yes. We can buck trunks into rounds and stack them where you want, chip just the brush, or haul all of it. The estimate prices each option.
Do you work outside town on wooded acreage?
Yes. Much of our North Liberty-area work is on Liberty Township parcels, including tree lines, lanes and trees near outbuildings.
My house was built in the woods. Which trees should I worry about?
Start with the tall, narrow trees closest to the house, especially on the side facing prevailing west and southwest winds. Look for dead tops, fungus at the base and leaning trunks.
Is there a tree service near me that handles storm-downed trees on a lane?
We do. Tell us whether the lane is blocked and if any lines are involved; if a line is down, call the utility first.
