Tree Work Where the Yard Ends at the Water
Tree Service in Simonton Lake is shaped by the lake itself. Water makes up nearly 12% of this census-designated place north of Elkhart, about 0.47 of its 3.98 square miles. Shoreline lots tend to be narrow, often slope to the water, and have trees that lean out over docks and boathouses toward the light. Those details decide how a job gets done more than the size of the tree does.
Wind off open water
Trees on a lakeshore get hit by wind that has had a clear run across the water. National Weather Service records show a 51 mph gust two miles southwest of Simonton Lake on March 8, 2017, and 3- to 6-inch diameter limbs down in Simonton Lake during the overnight bow echo of July 29, 2023. Limbs that size are heavy enough to damage a roof, a boat lift or a car.
How lakefront removals usually go
- Access from the street side. Most lake lots have a house between the street and the shoreline trees, so equipment can't drive up to the tree. Climbing and rigging do most of the work.
- Lowering, not dropping. Pieces are lowered on ropes to protect docks, seawalls, landscaping and the neighbor's house a few feet away.
- Carrying out. Wood and brush are carried or winched to the street for chipping. That labor is part of why lakefront work costs more than the same tree in an open yard.
- Keeping the water clean. We work to keep sawdust, chips and branches out of the lake.
Keep or remove?
A leaning lakeside tree is not automatically a hazard. Many have leaned for decades and developed extra wood to support it. What changes the picture is a lean that is getting worse, cracked soil on the side away from the lean, decay at the base, or roots undercut by erosion along the shore. Pruning to reduce weight on the water side can extend a tree's life when the base is sound.
The neighborhood
The CDP's population grew from 4,053 in 2000 to 4,710 in 2020. The lake is named for Samuel Simonton, a 19th-century farmer, and the community took its name from the lake. On lots where a house has been enlarged or rebuilt, trees that once stood well clear of the walls can end up a few feet from the roofline, which is a common reason for clearance pruning.
Other work we do here
1. Removing dead ash and declining maples 2. Raising low limbs over drives and walkways 3. Clearing storm damage 4. Stump grinding in tight side yards 5. Pruning trees away from rooflines and chimneys
Timing on the lake
Late fall and winter are often easier for lakefront jobs: boats and lifts are out, leaves are down so the structure is easy to see, and fewer neighbors are using their yards. Hazard trees and storm damage get scheduled whenever they come up.

Simonton Lake Questions
Why does lakefront tree removal cost more?
Equipment usually can't reach the tree, so it's climbed and taken down in pieces, and everything has to be carried to the street. More labor, more rigging, more time.
My tree leans over the lake. Should I take it down?
Not necessarily. A stable, long-standing lean is often fine. A lean that's worsening, decay at the base or erosion under the roots are reasons to act.
Can you keep debris out of the water?
We work to. Pieces are lowered on ropes toward land, and we clean up chips and sawdust along the shoreline before leaving.
Can you remove a tree right next to my boathouse?
Yes. A tree beside a boathouse or dock is climbed and taken apart in small pieces, each lowered by rope away from the structure. We look at the rigging points and landing zones during the estimate.
