A Town That Named Itself After a Tree
Tree Service in Buchanan comes with a bit of civic pride attached. Buchanan is known as the Redbud City for the redbud trees that historically lined its streets and main approaches, and it has long been recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. People here tend to care what happens to their trees, which suits us: most of our Buchanan work is about keeping good trees healthy and replacing the ones that have reached the end.
Redbuds: lovely, and not forever
Eastern redbud is a small understory tree, brilliant in spring and usually shorter-lived than the maples and oaks around it. Older redbuds often develop dieback in individual stems, splits at low forks and cankers on the trunk. Some of that can be pruned out to extend the tree's life. When most of the crown is dying, replanting is the better investment. If you want to keep the Redbud City look on your street, a young redbud planted in the right spot, with sun and room, is the next step after a removal.
Where the creek meets the river
Buchanan was first settled in 1833 at the point where McCoy Creek joins the St. Joseph River, and Pears Mill, an 1857 flour mill, still runs on creek water. Lots near the creek and river can be sloped and stay wet, and riverbank trees often lean out over the water. The St. Joseph valley also funnels storms. An F2 tornado damaged farms and homes just north of the city on April 12, 1979. On July 28, 2023, large branches came down on Glendora Road north of Reed Road, two miles north-northwest of town, and during the storms of August 11, 2026, Buchanan reported hail an inch and a half across. Hail shreds leaves and small twigs; it rarely kills a healthy tree, but it can stress one that was already struggling.
Oaks follow Michigan's calendar
Like the rest of Michigan, Buchanan falls under DNR guidance to avoid pruning oaks from April 15 to July 15. Oak wilt, carried by sap beetles to fresh wounds, can kill red-group oaks within weeks, and there's no cure. We do routine oak pruning in fall and winter, and if an oak is damaged in spring, we seal the wound right away.
Typical Buchanan work
- Pruning dead and cankered stems from older redbuds
- Removing redbuds and other trees past saving, then grinding stumps so a replacement can go in
- Crown cleaning on large maples and oaks over homes in the downtown historic district and older streets
- Riverside and creekside tree work on sloped lots
- Storm cleanup after summer wind and hail
A small city with history
Buchanan was platted in 1842, incorporated in 1858, and named for President James Buchanan. Clark Equipment Company was based here for most of the twentieth century. The 2020 census counted 4,300 residents on about 2.6 square miles. That compact size means many lots are close together, and big trees often reach over more than one yard.

Buchanan Facts
- Redbud City, Tree City USA. Buchanan is nicknamed the Redbud City for the redbuds that historically lined its streets and has long been recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.
- Creek and river confluence. The city was first settled in 1833 where McCoy Creek meets the St. Joseph River; Pears Mill, built in 1857, is powered by the creek.
- Storm record. An F2 tornado struck just north of the city on April 12, 1979; NWS logged large branches down 2 miles NNW on July 28, 2023, and 1.5-inch hail on August 11, 2026.
- Michigan oak timing. Michigan DNR guidance is to avoid pruning oaks from April 15 to July 15 because oak wilt spreads to fresh wounds then.

Buchanan Questions
My redbud has dead branches every year. Is it dying?
Possibly, but not always. Dead stems can be pruned out and the rest of the tree may carry on for years. If dieback spreads through most of the crown, replanting is usually the better plan.
Can you plant a new redbud after removing the old one?
We grind the stump below grade so a new tree can go nearby, and we can advise on placement. A spot with sun and room to spread gives a redbud its best start.
Is hail damage a reason to remove a tree?
Rarely on its own. Hail strips leaves and bruises small twigs, and healthy trees recover. A tree that was already declining may need a closer look the next season.
