Getting the Stump Out of the Way
Stump grinding uses a machine with a toothed cutting wheel to chew a stump down into chips, usually several inches below the surface. It's the most common way to deal with a stump in South Bend yards because it's faster and far less destructive than digging one out. The wheel works across the top of the stump and down into the main roots near the trunk, and when it's done, you're left with a pile of chips and a shallow hole where the stump used to be.
Why bother with the stump
A stump left in the lawn is a mowing hazard, and some species keep sending up sprouts from the roots for years. Decaying stumps also attract carpenter ants and fungi. Many homeowners in older neighborhoods have stumps from ash trees taken down after emerald ash borer moved through the city, and those are some of the most common jobs we see. A stump in the tree lawn can also make it harder to replant there.
How deep we go
HomeGuide notes that a standard grind goes about 4 to 6 inches below ground. That's enough to lay topsoil and seed. If you want to plant a new tree near the same spot, put in a patio or run a fence line through it, we can go deeper and chase surface roots outward. Grinding out every root is a different job: HomeGuide points out that root removal is billed separately from stump grinding.
Before we grind
Grinding reaches underground, so buried lines matter. Indiana 811 should be called before digging, and we check where the gas, water, electric, cable and irrigation lines run before the wheel goes in. In South Bend, if the stump is in the tree lawn between the sidewalk and curb, the permit for removing that tree usually covers the stump as part of the work; we'll confirm at the estimate. Sandy soils along the St. Joseph River lowlands grind cleanly, while clay-heavy ground on the higher till areas can hold more rocks and debris that slow the work down.
The chips and the hole
A large stump can produce a surprising pile of chips. You can keep them to fill the hole and let them settle, or have them hauled off and the hole backfilled with topsoil. Chips left in the hole will sink over a season as they decompose, so plan on topping off the spot before you seed it.
Same day or later
If we're removing the tree, grinding the stump on the same visit is usually the simplest choice. We also grind old stumps on their own, including ones left behind by another crew or the city years ago.
Typical Jobs
Stump work can be a single stump or a full yard of old ones.
Single-stump grinding
One stump ground below grade, with the chips left or removed.
Multiple stumps
Several stumps ground on one visit, which lowers the cost of each additional stump.
Surface root grinding
Roots running across the lawn ground down so they no longer catch mower blades.
Chip removal and backfill
Chips hauled out and the hole filled with topsoil, ready to seed.

Stump Grinding Questions
How much does stump grinding cost?
HomeGuide puts most first stumps at about $120 to $400, with each additional stump about $30 to $60 and minimum fees around $80 to $160. Very large stumps can run $300 to $800. We price each stump after measuring it.
Will the stump grow back?
Grinding removes the stump and the root crown, which ends sprouting for most trees. A few species can still send up shoots from roots left in the ground, and those can be cut or ground as they appear.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
You can, but it helps to shift a few feet over and to grind deeper first. Remove most of the chips and replace them with soil, because decomposing wood chips in the planting hole can rob the new tree of nitrogen.
Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding?
Yes, buried lines should be marked before any grinding. Indiana 811 is free to call. Gas and electric lines often run closer to old stumps than people expect, especially near the street.
How long does stump grinding take?
A typical residential stump takes well under an hour to grind. Large hardwood stumps and jobs with lots of surface roots take longer, and cleanup and backfill add time.
