From Prairie Village to Shade Trees
Tree Service in Berrien Springs takes place in a village that started out with few trees at all. It was first known as Wolf's Prairie, after a Potawatomi chief named Wolf and a nearby 1,000-acre prairie, and the Pike family settled here in 1829. Almost two centuries of planting have filled the village with shade trees, and today the work is mostly about the big ones: maples and oaks over houses, river trees on sloped lots, and the occasional dead ash.
The river shapes the lots
Berrien Springs sits on the St. Joseph River, and the village's small footprint, about one square mile with 0.08 square miles of water, means many properties are close to the river or on the slopes that lead to it. On a slope, roots anchor unevenly, a falling tree tends to go downhill, and machines need firm, level ground to work from. River-edge trees also take on water during high flows. We plan removals here around what's downhill, not just what's nearby.
Michigan rules for oaks
If your property has oaks, Michigan DNR guidance is clear: avoid pruning oaks from April 15 to July 15. Oak wilt, which kills red-group oaks within weeks, spreads when beetles carry spores to fresh wounds. MSU research cited by the DNR shows infection risk peaks in May and June. If you have oaks, we'll schedule their pruning for fall or winter, and if a spring storm tears a limb, the wound should be painted promptly with tree-wound or latex paint.
History you can see
The 1839 courthouse, described as the oldest in Michigan, and its square are on the National Register, and the log house Francis B. Murdoch, the county's first lawyer, built in 1831 still stands as the oldest surviving example of its kind in Michigan. Berrien Springs was the county seat from 1837 until 1894. Old village lots like these often have large trees close to foundations and porches, and sometimes trees older than the additions built around them. Removals there are done in sections with ropes, not by felling.
Common work around the village
- Dormant-season pruning of oaks and maples
- Removal of trees on river slopes
- Dead ash removal
- Clearance pruning over roofs, porches and drives
- Storm cleanup
- Stump grinding so a lawn or bed can be restored
Students, owners and rentals
The village had 783 households and 1,910 residents in 2020, and Andrews University is nearby in Oronoko Charter Township. Rentals are part of the mix, and in those cases tree decisions usually belong to the property owner. We are glad to send a written estimate with photos to an owner or manager who doesn't live on site.
Wood from oak removals
If an oak died suddenly in summer, oak wilt is a possibility. Michigan's DNR advises against moving that wood; it should be burned on site, chipped or debarked before April 15. We'll ask about symptoms and handle the wood accordingly.

Berrien Springs Questions
Can I prune my oak in May if it's only small branches?
It's best to wait. May and June are the peak months for oak wilt infection in Michigan, and even small cuts are open wounds. Fall or winter is the safer time.
Is a tree on a river slope harder to remove?
Usually. Equipment has to stay on level ground, the tree's natural fall line is downhill, and pieces may need to be lowered by rope. We plan that before quoting.
I own a rental in the village. Can you work with me remotely?
Yes. We can meet a tenant or go on our own, then send photos and a written estimate for you to approve.
Do you grind stumps on sloped yards?
Yes. Grinders work on moderate slopes, and we position the machine from the uphill or level side. Very steep banks sometimes call for cutting the stump flush and leaving the roots to hold the soil.
