New Carlisle Has Had a Rough Run of Storms

Tree Service in New Carlisle has meant a lot of storm cleanup lately. Twice in recent years the National Weather Service has recorded trees down across this Olive Township town of about 1,900 people, and the first question we hear is usually whether the trees that survived are safe to keep.

July 29, 2023. A bow echo crossed northern Indiana after midnight. NWS damage reports for New Carlisle list numerous trees, tree limbs and power lines down, with some trees on homes and no injuries. August 11, 2026. The derecho that crossed the region that morning brought trees and limbs down in New Carlisle again, along with damage in Walkerton, North Liberty and South Bend. A third, smaller report came on July 15, 2024, when a large tree blocked Tamarack Road near New Carlisle.

What a storm leaves behind. Trees that stayed standing are not always fine. After a storm we check for:

  • Cracks at the junction of two trunks, which often open further in the next wind
  • Hanging limbs caught in the crown, sometimes called widowmakers
  • Roots that lifted on one side, leaving soil cracked or mounded
  • Bark torn off the trunk where a neighboring tree fell against it

Some of those trees can be pruned and kept. Others are better removed before they come down on their own.

A town with a long tree history. New Carlisle was platted in 1835 on land first called Bourissa Hills, and its historic district is listed on the National Register. Just south of town, Bendix Woods County Park holds the Studebaker tree sign: 8,000 pines planted in 1938 to spell the company name, listed on the National Register in 1985. Older homes in the historic district often have large shade trees close to the house, which means careful sectional removals rather than felling.

Growth on the edges. The town now sits beside the Indiana Enterprise Center industrial park, a 188 MWdc solar station on about 1,000 acres, and a large Amazon data center. More construction nearby means more cleared land, new tree lines exposed to wind for the first time, and trees with roots damaged by grading. Trees that suddenly find themselves at the edge of an open field are more vulnerable than they used to be.

How we handle a New Carlisle job. We look at the tree and the space around it, note what can be saved, and write an estimate that lists every tree, the method, and what happens to the wood. If a tree is on a line, the utility goes first.

Before the next storm season. Spring, before leaves fill in, is a good time to look over the trees that matter most: the ones over the house, the driveway and the play area. Dead limbs, cracked unions and fungus at the base are easier to see then. Fixing a weak limb with a planned cut costs far less than cleaning it off a roof in August.

New Carlisle Questions

My tree survived the storm but lost a big limb. Should it come down?

Not necessarily. If the trunk and main unions are sound, a cleanup prune that removes the torn stub and balances the crown may be enough. A crack running into the trunk changes that answer.

Do you handle trees on larger rural lots around New Carlisle?

Yes. We work in town and on the farm and wooded parcels around Olive Township, including fence lines and tree rows.

What should I do if a tree is on a power line?

Stay away from it and call the electric utility first. Once the line is safe, we can remove the tree and clean up.

Can you check my trees before storms rather than after?

Yes. A walk-around inspection lets us point out deadwood, weak unions and lean problems, then quote only the work that matters. Many owners spread that work over two seasons.
